From the Field

Mark Rathswohl, Field Operations Chief
Construction on our new Camarillo Center is really moving along. We hope to have the new facility finished in a few months, and likely do a formal dedication in June. Currently our residential corpsmembers at Camarillo are based at a school in Oxnard and anxious to make the move to the new location.
The Salmon Restoration Program completed its 2008 season October 31 and it looks like fish, fish and more fish will be thriving thanks to the hard work of our corpsmembers. Comings and Goings

New to the CCC is Ben Franklin, who comes to us from the Pennsylvania Conservation Corps. Ben is working as a C 1 at the Placer Center, where he also hopes to make use of his electrical energy expertise in future apprenticeship programs .... Charlene Tapia, who began her CCC career as a corpsmember and most recently worked in Recruitment at headquarters, is now working as an AGPA -- Associate Governmental Program Analyst -- in the Training Unit .... Jennifer Johnson of Personnel’s Exam Unit has transferred to the State Personnel Board after three years at the CCC. We wish her well.

Got a suggestion for a Best Practice, or an item for our Comings and Goings column? E-mail Susanne Levitsky at susannel@ccc.ca.gov . Deadline for our January issue is December 20.

Meet our Corpsmembers

Here is where we’ll have a short piece (up to 150 words) written by a different corpsmember every month. They can talk about themselves, why they joined, what they hope to do in the future, or perhaps a current project they’re working on. Ideally this would be accompanied by a small photo of the corpsmember. Here is where we’ll have a short piece (up to 150 words) written by a different corpsmember every month. Best Practices

The CCC’s Norwalk Center is participating in the Explorer’s Program to assist corpsmembers in transitioning to life after the Corps. Best Practices is an idea asserting that there is a technique, method, process, activity, incentive or reward that is more effective at delivering a particular outcome than any other technique, method, process, etc. The idea is that with proper processes, checks, and testing, a desired outcome can be delivered with fewer problems and unforeseen complications. Best practices can also be defined as the most efficient and effective way of accomplishing a task, based on repeatable procedures that have proven themselves over time for large numbers of people.

Directors message

As the days turn shorter and cooler, the CCC is once again preparing for winter storms through flood training sessions throughout the state. I had the opportunity to see corpsmembers learn these techniques at a training session Nov. 14 in Sacramento, sponsored by the Dept. of Water Resources. Later this month, I’ll be exploring pre-apprenticeship programs with the Fairfield Carpenter’s Training Center, as a pilot opportunity for corpsmembers.
